Childhood is a realm of endless wonder, where every day holds the promise of new adventures and the greatest worries revolve around unfinished homework or who gets to be the captain during recess games. For Yug Sharma, a ten-year-old with a heart full of dreams1  and an infectious smile, life was wandering in the fields of possibilities. Amidst the excitement of playdates and the thrill of new discoveries; health and nutrition were the last things on his mind. Yet it soon became the centerpiece of his young life, where he learned to excellently manage the special times of childhood and his type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

Growing up with Confidence

It all started in the spring of 2021. The Sharma family was enjoying the usual hustle and bustle of daily life when they began to notice subtle yet concerning changes in Yug. What began as a puzzling series of symptoms — unexplained weight loss, constant hunger, and fatigue — soon revealed a juvenile diabetes diagnosis that would redefine their everyday lives. Like any parents, their first response was one of deep concern and a flurry of questions. “How would this affect Yug’s childhood? Could he still enjoy his favorite activities and foods? Would he be able to manage this condition independently, especially in settings like school?”

Managing diabetes in kids is particularly challenging because it demands constant vigilance and adaptation to the unpredictable activities and dietary habits typical of children.

However, for Yug, the diagnosis meant a new routine centered around managing his blood glucose levels and administering insulin injections. Yet, he approached his condition with remarkable bravery and resilience as his father fondly remembers the moment Yug administered his first insulin injection with a smile, a true testament to his maturity beyond age.

A New Normal

Managing Type 1 diabetes requires careful blood glucose monitoring, which can fluctuate unpredictably due to diet, physical activity, and other factors. For the Sharmas, this meant constantly balancing vigilance with the desire to let their child enjoy his childhood. The family embarked on a journey of learning and adaptation, seeking out the best ways to manage this condition. It was during this quest that they discovered FreeStyle Libre, a continuous glucose monitoring system that would significantly improve their quality of life. FreeStyle Libre revolutionized the way Yug managed his diabetes. Unlike traditional methods, it allows for painless and continuous glucose monitoring through a small sensor on the arm. This sensor provides real-time glucose readings, which can be accessed via a smartphone app, allowing both Yug and his parents to keep track of his glucose levels effortlessly.

"I can now monitor my glucose levels even in school and share the readings with my parents via the LibreLinkUp blood glucose tracker app. This allows me to play all the games I love without having to worry anymore,” says an excited Yug.

Reclaiming Childhood

With the help of FreeStyle Libre, Yug’s life transformed. The constant worry and discomfort associated with managing his diabetes were replaced by a sense of security and freedom. His parents could now ensure his glucose levels were stable without constantly interrupting his day. This technological aid meant that Yug could partake in childhood delights — playing sports, enjoying treats, and focusing on school — without any sort of looming uncertainty.

"Yug generally eats a healthy diet. But now, once in a while, he can enjoy his favorite pizza slice without worrying too much about his glucose levels," his father shares. "FreeStyle Libre has truly changed all our lives and has made such a difference. Especially for Yug, who feels so much more confident now and doesn't have to miss out on all the best parts of what makes childhood so special."

The journey with Type 1 diabetes is not without its challenges, but for Yug and his family, health technology is like a very caring companion. It has provided them with the tools to manage Yug’s condition effectively while allowing him to experience the joys of childhood fully.

For parents facing similar diagnoses with their children, the Sharmas’ experience offers a message of hope and reassurance. Trust in your child's strength, embrace the available health technology, and focus on the possibilities rather than the limitations.

With the right support and tools, children with diabetes can lead full, active, and joyful lives, just like Yug.
