While the term "diabetes" was coined by Apollonius of Memphis around 250 BC, it was only in 1797 that a Scottish military surgeon, John Rollo, added the word "mellitus" (from the Latin word for honey)1.

In the early days, doctors relied on trial and error, various herbs, and extreme diets to treat symptoms. By the 1800s, French physician Apollinaire Bouchardat, known as the Father of Diabetology, started tailoring plans to individual patients that revolved around regular exercise and urine testing. Later, physicians like Frederick Allen introduced stricter regimens that involved fasting for up to 10 days, with a heavily restricted diet comprising fats and protein1. While these intense diets temporarily lowered blood sugar levels, they left patients weak and offered very little long-term hope.

How did the discovery of insulin transform blood sugar control?

With the landmark discovery of insulin in 1921, care transformed almost overnight from a severe diagnosis into a manageable condition2. Over subsequent decades, scientists refined insulin molecules to last longer in the body, encourage insulin production, and improve cellular absorption. By the 1990s, major landmark studies proved that keeping blood sugar under close watch drastically reduced long-term small blood vessel complications in the eyes, nerves, and kidneys3. Centuries of research on diabetes management has paved the way for innovative and breakthrough therapy classes, including the GLP-1 receptor agonists. Mirroring a natural gut hormone that the body naturally releases after eating to support digestion, therapies such as GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists encourage insulin release when blood sugar is high. It   slows digestion and acts on appetite centers in the brain . They act on appetite centers in the brain, helping people feel fuller for longer, slow the movement of food from the stomach, and help the body regulate blood sugar levels more effectively.

Today, we understand that diabetes management centers on how our bodies process food into energy. Following a meal, food breaks down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. The pancreas secrete insulin, allowing glucose to enter the cells and give us energy. But with diabetes, this finely balanced system can become disrupted. To monitor blood sugar and the strain it can place on blood vessels and organs, modern medicine stresses on routine care.

Of late, telemedicine has played a huge role in making tools like continuous glucose monitoring systems, smart insulin pens, and automated insulin pumps more accessible, offering real-time updates on blood sugar trends without constant finger pricks.

It goes without saying, no matter the treatment, the crux of diabetes management relies on the power of simple everyday habits that build a healthy lifestyle. Staying well-hydrated, engaging in regular movement like walking or light strength training, and eating balanced meals with plenty of protein and fiber work hand in hand with treatment plans. A diagnosis should never feel like a limitation, especially when we have the knowledge and resources to live a full and confident life. With Type 2 diabetes now recognized as a condition where long-term remission is possible, managing your health is more achievable than ever before.
