Unstoppable: Make Travel a Priority in Your 50s

BY TULIKA BHOGARAJU

Although hilarious, this statement couldn't be more true for a majority of Indian parents, according to Abbott's Ensure Dreams Survey. The survey, conducted across six metros, found that 98 percent of parents aged over 50 had unfulfilled dreams, with travel topping that list.

So here's a little inspiration to throw caution to the wind and hit the road, because if there was ever an age to travel the world, it would most definitely be 50. At 50 you've built a career, made the money and brought up the kids. You're unstoppable. All that's left to do now is live truly for yourself. So get packing already!

Tips for a Smooth Trip

Before you hit the road, there are a few things to know to make sure you make the most of your travels in your 50s.

Be Brave

The most important thing to remember is to be brave and open yourself up to different experiences. You may miss out on exciting adventures by staying in your comfort zone. Just let go and have fun. Another couple of years worth delay and you may not have the same energy you do now.

Prioritize Sleep

You can enjoy your holiday best when you're well rested. Lack of sleep can cause all sorts of problems for your body. It can affect your stamina, memory and even immunity. Make sure to catch up on those zzz's, especially if you're travelling to a different time zone. Power naps can also be your saving grace on these trips. Just catch some shut-eye whenever you can, so you don't exhaust yourself.

Pack Light

Packing is almost an art — one that most Indian moms have mastered, as they fit feasts into lunchboxes and what seems like entire wardrobes into carry-on bags! But for novices, packing efficiently can be hard to get right. A good rule of thumb is to pack everything you want and then halve it. You don't want to strain your back lugging a huge suitcase. Pack light so you can travel with ease while having space for all the souvenirs you take home.

The one exception to this rule is your medication. You should pack a few extra days worth of your medications and supplies so you know you're covered for unexpected travel delays.

Give Yourself Buffer Time

There's nothing worse than almost missing your bus or flight. Give yourself enough buffer time so you don't have to spend time rushing. Also, consider arranging your taxis a little ahead of time or reaching out to the airport in advance if you have mobility concerns, so you're not running around last minute.

Know Your Limits

Hiking up a mountain may sound fun, but it's hard work that requires a lot of prep and good fitness levels. To really make the most of your adventure, plan ahead so you can train your endurance, shape up your diet and take the right supplement so you have the energy you need. It comes down to this: If you can, then do it, but don't push yourself to do things you aren't ready for. You'll always find another exciting thing to do round the corner.
